Long-Term Care Insurance shopping site LTC Tree has identified a disturbing downtrend in the rate at which applicants for Long Term Care Insurance are approved by insurance companies and able to buy coverage.

The decision to buy a Long Term Care Insurance policy is an important planning decision, but even consumers willing and able to purchase protection are increasingly being turned away by insurance companies, unable to buy a policy at any price. A variety of chronic conditions appear to be responsible for the trend, including the well-publicized obesity epidemic, diabetes, heart disease, and even an increased reliance on anxiety drugs.

LTC Tree CEO, Darrick Wilkins, explains that, “These companies are really tightening the underwriting belt. People with conditions such as Diabetes that would have been approved in the past are getting declined now. If you have good health, Long Term Care Insurance is a savvy retirement planning strategy to hedge your risk for the unforeseen, like accidents or Alzheimer’s. Like any insurance, you hope to buy it, put it in the safety deposit box, and never touch it again.”

Long Term Care Insurance Approval Statistics:

  •     LTC Tree’s Case Approval rate from 1999-2011 is 80.91%
  •     LTC Tree’s Case Approval rate from 2012-2013 is 65.45%

Long Term Care encompasses a variety of services. The most common types of long term care are in-home health aids, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and adult day cares. Long Term Care Insurance is a solution to help cover the cost of these expensive services, protecting personal assets from being used up in life’s last stages.

Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia are the leading reasons people require long term care services. Obesity, stroke, and heart disease are a few of the other most common reasons for needing long term care.

According to the CDC, the adult obesity rate in the United States has grown to 35% and medical costs for people who are obese are an average of $1,429 higher than those of normal weight.

This shocking trend mandates a shift in perspective on health from treatment to prevention. Purchasing a Long Term Care Insurance policy is critical to protecting your health from circumstances you can’t control, but maintaining your health afterwards is just as critical.

LTC Tree has been an authority in the Long Term Care Insurance business for 15 years. Recently, they decided to approach insurance from a new perspective.

Health Matters
Mr. Wilkins goes on to say that, “LTC Tree wants consumers to stay as healthy as possible throughout retirement, which is why we are excited to announce the rollout of our Long Term Care Insurance Health and Wellness section on our website. We provide the latest cutting edge health and wellness tips that you can put into immediate use to cut your chances of ever needing Long Term Care.”

LTC Tree Health encourages careful and thoughtful decisions in every aspect of life: nutrition, exercise, mental health, and social interaction. Combined, these factors play a large part in a person’s overall wellness. By taking control of your health, you can significantly reduce your risk of disease and continue to do the things you love.

With more applicants for Long Term Care Insurance being rejected, starting this important piece of retirement planning at an earlier (and healthier) age is more important than ever. It’s also critical to work with an independent agent who can navigate the various insurance company health regulations and select a company that is a proper fit for your unique needs.
