Sharp Rise in Motorcyclists on Roads This Year - and More to Follow

Post Office advises riders to shop around to ensure best motor insurance deal

London, London (PRWEB) May 31, 2009 -- Research from the Post Office has shown an increase of almost 25 per cent in the number of motorists switching to two wheels and ditching their car for a motorbike or moped this year to save on everyday costs such as petrol and motor insurance. A further 13 per cent said they were considering switching to a bike because of the rising cost of motoring caused by the current economic climate.

Motorcycle users are able to save money through reduced road tax, parking charges and of course motor insurance. With the recession challenging the majority of consumers to cut costs, this can seem like an attractive option. However figures have shown that motorbikes make up 20 per cent of road accidents in the UK, despite representing only 1 per cent of road users, so ensuring you are fully protected by your motorcycle insurance is crucial.

Some motorcycle insurance providers also offer customers a number of added benefits, including accessories cover and multi-bike deals.

Post Office head of general insurance Richard Pennant-Jones said:

"At a time when many people are stretched financially, switching from four wheels to two is one way to save money. Using mopeds or motorcycles over the spring and summer can help reduce day-to-day transport and running costs, including motor insurance which could be significantly cheaper for motorcycles and mopeds than cars. We advise people to shop around and look for deals which offer them something extra".
