Motor Trend Video Road Test: Dodge Challenger vs Ford Shelby GT500

New Versions of Classic Muscle Cars Rekindle Rivalry

IRVINE, Calif. (Business Wire EON/PRWEB ) June 12, 2008 -- NEWS FACTS-In a new magazine feature and online video segment available now at www.motortrend.com, Motor Trends Arthur St. Antoine pits the new 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 against the Ford Shelby GT500an updated rematch of two classic 70s-era muscle cars.

To see the complete video of the comparison, go to: http://tinyurl.com/6b42bz

  • The 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 features a 6.1-liter Hemi V-8 engine, rear spoiler and bulging tiresbut still greatly resembles its iconic 70s look. Mustang was the first model out of the gate to go retro, with the current late 60s-inspired version debuting in 2005.
  • On the track, the lighter and more powerful Ford Shelby GT500 outperforms both the last GT500 Motor Trend tested in 2006 and the Challenger SRT8, with a 4.3 second 0-60 time and a 12.6 second quarter-mile time at 114.2 mph.
  • Out on the road, the heavier and larger Challenger is impressively balanced, with a fully independent suspension that gives the car a sophistication and poise lacking in the nose-heavy GT500.
  • Dodge has already sold nearly all of the 6400 Challenger SRT8s it intends to build for the 2008 model year, with a price that undercuts the Shelby GT500 by more than $4000.

Attribute to Angus MacKenzie, Editor-in-Chief of Motor Trend

Both cars do a great job of marrying traditional muscle car structure to contemporary design and top flight performance. Not only do both cars mark a return to form, they improve on that form.

Attribute to Arthur St. Antoine, Editor at Large for Motor Trend

The new Shelby and Challenger demark a retro-car revolution. The Challenger, with its balanced handling, outstanding interior and updated exterior, is a particularly good example of an homage that outpaces the original.
