NEW YORK (PRWEB) October 11, 2012
Researchers at Yale University have developed a checklist that determines the effectiveness of early alcohol intervention methodologies by emergency room physicians.
Emergency room physicians were given a list of four specific areas to discuss with their patient, consisting of the following:
1. Permission to discuss alcohol consumption.
2. Readiness to reduce alcohol consumption.
3. Correlation of current health issue with alcohol consumption.
4. Negotiation of a plan to decrease alcohol consumption.
Upon completion of the intervention study, most emergency room physicians reported that they felt the techniques were effective in bringing to light a potential alcohol abuse situation. In addition, most of the ER physicians surveyed also stated that their patients were receptive to speaking about their alcohol consumption related issues.
“Opening up a dialogue has proven to be one of the most effective means of combating alcohol abuse,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “And this just doesn’t apply to emergency room physicians. The principle of having open discussions with teens and underage children will have a major impact on their alcohol and drug use, as well as their attitudes towards both. “
