A recent study out of Yale University suggests that the earlier an individual is exposed to drinking alcohol, the greater the risk of developing drinking problems later in life.

The study focused on over 1,000 college freshmen and focused on how much and how often they drank, along with the age they began drinking and whether they have any current problems with alcohol.

The results revealed that individuals who had their first drink early, at approximately age 15, had a higher incidence of heavier drinking during college. In addition, the study also showed that those who progressed from one drink to intoxication quickly, also tended to have an increased risk of heavy drinking.

“Naturally, education in school regarding the dangers of alcohol won’t ever completely stop underage drinking,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “However, it’s still important to communicate these messages because they do, indeed, have an impact and can reduce the need for alcohol rehab.”

It’s estimated that thirty percent of people within the US misuse alcohol, including binge drinking, and are alcohol dependent.
