Mourning Expressions Gives +34 Million Grievers A Voice Enabling Them To Gracefully Share They Are Grieving – Without Saying A Word

Mourning Expressions

“When I looked at the stages of grief on my Mourning Expressions, all of my feelings became validated in a way I had not experienced before." Teresa Jenkins, owner of Teresa K. Jenkins Designs

Gray Evolution, LLC filed a utility patent on February 26, 2010 and has begun production of Mourning Expressions, an instrument specifically created to bring help, hope and connectivity to those suffering through grief.

Each year more than 34 million people grieve within the United States alone. The grieving process is traumatic and painful and, because almost everybody will go through the process at least once in their life, Mourning Expressions is positioned to help this large community.

What is Mourning Expressions?
The invention is a heart-shaped pendant with the 7 stages of grief etched onto the back. This educates grievers about the feelings they will experience and it works to validate their feelings.

Teresa Jenkins, owner of Teresa K. Jenkins Designs, experienced this validation firsthand saying, “Over the past two years I have been experiencing all the stages of grief without realizing I was grieving leading me to continuously question myself. When I looked at the stages of grief on my Mourning Expressions, all of my feelings became validated in a way I had not experienced before."

The instrument contains a Bead of Acknowledgement positioned next to the stages that the griever physically moves up or down to acknowledge and accept their feelings. Positive goal setting is also encouraged with ‘Survivor’ included.

Increased Connectivity and Support
Because grievers tend to feel alienated from their communities, another important function of Mourning Expressions is to bring grievers increased connectivity and support. This is accomplished when the griever attaches the charms that share publicly who they are grieving for and why:

  • Charm Choices for Affected Loved One: Self, Husband, Mother, Father, Son, Daughter, Sister, Brother, Best Friend and Loved One
  • Charm Choices for Cause of Grief Charm: Accident, Passed Away, Brain Disease, Cancer, Breast Cancer, Alzheimer’s, AIDs, Divorce, Disease and Away

Here's how the charms work: Imagine the woman next to you is wearing the ‘Son’ and ‘Cancer’ charms. You see and become aware that her son has cancer without her having to say a word. You now have a choice to connect — ask her how old her son is, or perhaps give a reassuring smile. While not everyone will choose to make a connection, the opportunity has at least been presented.

Additional Benefits
Beyond feeling validation, acknowledgment and acceptance, positive goal setting and increased connectivity and support, in the most basic sense Mourning Expressions acts as a powerful consoler and tangible grounding point when a griever becomes overwhelmed with emotions.

Concept Creation
This instrument was born from Gray Evolution, LLC Founder, Anita Scott’s, personal experience with grief. Anita says, “While grieving I was able to identify gaps where I knew there were serious opportunities to make the process easier for future grievers, and that became my goal.”

Anita continues, “While the grieving process will never be easy, my wish for Mourning Expressions is that it makes the process more bearable by offering help, hope and increased connectivity.”
