Titles featured include -
The Queen
Directed by Stephen Frears, responsible for films such as High Fidelity and Dirty Pretty Things; The Queen is set at a time when New Labour was still seen as being new - the week following the tragic death of Princess Diana. A brilliantly cast Helen Mirren won an Academy Award for her performance as Queen Elizabeth II, while Michael Sheen, later seen as media legend David Frost in the political film Frost / Nixon, plays an impressive Tony Blair - one who reminds us of the Blair of old. This is the highest British film in the list.
W
A compelling, comedic and disturbing film that tells the life story of George W Bush, Oliver Stone's 'W' jumps backwards and forwards from the events following the invasion of Iraq, back to when Bush was a young tearaway at Yale. Perfectly cast, actor Josh Brolin portrays the verbally challenged President, while screen veteran Richard Dreyfuss plays his equally controversial vice President Dick Cheney. British audiences should keep a special look out for Ioan Gruffudd's brilliant portrayal of Tony Blair in the film. Although most of Gruffudd's scenes ended up on the cutting room floor, they can be found in the deleted scenes featured on the DVD.
Primary Colors
A barely concealed take on the election campaign of US President Bill Clinton, John Travolta is at his friendliest, playing the smooth talking operator candidate Governor Jack Stanton as he campaigns for the Presidency. Billy Bob Thornton stars as a spin doctor while British actress Emma Thompson plays Travolta's long suffering, but loyal wife Susan. Largely positive towards the candidate (and therefore Clinton), the film also shows the ruthlessness that is required to take political office as they spin their way into power.
Bobby
An optimistic, moving film written and directed by Emilio Estevez; one of the main draws of Bobby is that it is a film that shows the effect that politicians can have on people when they get their messages right. The Barack Obama of his day, able to mobilise a huge youth vote, Estevez's film covers the run up to the assassination of US Senator Robert F Kennedy, brother of murdered President John F Kennedy. An ensemble piece that features some of Hollywood's great stars including Harry Belafonte, Laurence Fishburne, Anthony Hopkins, Ashton Kutcher, Shia LaBeouf, William H Macy and Demi Moore; Bobby is unforgettable.
The Last King of Scotland
A film as far away from British politics as it can get. This tells the gripping story of the brutal Ugandan dictator Idi Amin (brilliantly portrayed by Forest Whitaker). James McAvoy stars as Dr. Nicholas Garrigan, a Scottish doctor, keen to escape his conservative father (conservative with a small C); while working as a missionary, he meets the new President of Uganda after he seizes power and is invited to become his personal physician in the new Government. Initially becoming friends due to Idi Amin being an avid Scotland supporter, it is not long before he realises that Idi Amin has a dark side and that he is in over his head.
Other highlights include Neil Jordan's Irish biopic Michael Collins, Oliver Stone's other films in his Presidential trilogy - JFK and Nixon; Kevin Costner and Bruce Greenwood's Thirteen Days and the Michael Douglas / Annette Benning romantic comedy, The American President.
A number of the films selected by Blockbuster.co.uk are blockbusters in their own right and great films to entertain anyone with even very little interest in politics; but since Blockbuster.co.uk has such a massive range of titles on site, they also have all the films that political junkies cannot afford to miss. Including 1984, Wag the Dog, 2007 series Party Animals - which also stars new Doctor Who Matt Smith; and classic politics show Yes Minister, which was apparently British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's favourite.
Speaking of Thatcher, given that 2009 marks the thirtieth anniversary of the Iron Lady's rise to the job of Prime Minster, there are two titles in the list that focus on the former PM's life - the first is The Falklands Play, set during the Falkland's War and Margaret Thatcher - Long Walk to Finchley, which covers her early life. Whether you loved her, loathed her; or simply don't remember her.... you can find out more about Thatcher on DVD.
Many of these films are available as Blu-Ray or DVD rental both online and in your local Blockbuster store.
