Team 4 Wheel Parts off-road racing legend Robby Gordon notched an event win at the third annual BlueWater Desert Challenge in Parker, Ariz., on October 13 and 14. Gordon drove the 4 Wheel Parts vehicle, sponsored by Speed Energy, Toyo Tires, and RPM Offroad, in the Desert Class 1500, achieving first-place finishes during both days of the event. The win is Gordon’s second at a Parker event in 2012, and he has a chance for a third win in December. The BlueWater win gives Gordon enough points to win the Best in the Desert Class 1500 Championship, which will be awarded at the end of the year.
The BlueWater Desert Challenge included a field of 150 drivers competing over two days of racing. The track in Parker was sandy and loose below steely running boards, giving all of the drivers a tough time with traction. During the Class 1500 qualifying session, Gordon captured the pole position, putting him good starting position for the race. Each day of racing required Gordon to complete three laps around the Parker course, with the first two laps measuring 26 miles, and the final lap-to-finish-line 21 miles.
Gordon fought the track’s tough conditions on both days, fighting the vehicle’s urge to roll over on its own mud flaps several times during the race. Upon winning race, Gordon not only reached the top of the Class 1500, he clinched the season series on points, winning the championship. During the awards ceremony at the conclusion of the event, Gordon thanked his pit crew for giving him a tough vehicle that was “Robby-proof” through to the finish line.
Although Gordon has already won the 2012 Best in the Desert Championship, the final Parker race will take place December 1-3, with several race classes battling it out in the desert one last time.
