On June 6, 2013, Spartan Race comments on the journey of Tara Henry, who overcame a drug overdose and recovered to complete a Spartan Race.

According to the Spartan blog, Tara Henry suffered an accidental drug overdose which nearly ended her life. After spending two weeks in the hospital, Henry made the decision to go to detox and rehab. “It was one of the hardest decisions I ever had to make,” she says in the blog.

Henry always lived up to the expectation of being strong. “Once they called me strong,” she says, “I could never be anything less. I want to stop being defined, I want to be able to have a weakness… and agreeing to go to rehab, I showed my weakness and my strength at the same time.”

Though she had never competed in an obstacle race or a mud run, Henry credits the Spartan Race for helping her post-rehab transition. “Fifteen months ago I was a mess… then I came across an advertisement for Spartan Race,” she explains. “Instantly, I became curious and noticed there was a race in my area in a matter of a few months. I signed up immediately. I began training and quickly realized I was replacing my drug addiction with working out and becoming a healthier me.”

She continues, “I have said it many times but I honestly believe Spartan Race helped save my life.”

Joe De Sena, founder and CEO of Spartan Race, is proud of Tara Henry’s determination during her recovery from a drug overdose. “Spartan Race has had a positive impact on many racers’ lives,” he says. “Tara is a true Spartan for staying strong, fighting to change her life and completing a Spartan Race despite all of the hardships that she has faced.”
