I would do something most able-bodied people wouldn’t even think of doing in their wildest dreams. I needed to prove myself once again and this time I want to go all out.

On June 7, Spartan Race comments on Michael Mills’ incredible accomplishment as the first paralyzed participant to finish a Spartan Race and his decision to participate in the 2013 Summer Death Race.

In the Spartan Blog, Michael Mills discusses his journey to become a Spartan. When he was just 16, Mills was hit by a drunk driver, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. At first he did not know what his life would be like, but now he lives just like any other individual. “I am now 36 years old, married with three lovely children, working a fulltime job and an athlete in two sports,” Mills says. He has competed in races all over the world, from mud runs to the Wheelchair Games.

On March 9th, Mills became the first paralyzed person to complete a Spartan Race. He received much positive feedback after his accomplishment, but also some criticism from individuals who felt that his team carried him through portions of the race. To prove himself to these people, Mills has announced that he plans to participate in the 2013 Summer Death Race.

Mills says, “I would do something most able-bodied people wouldn’t even think of doing in their wildest dreams. I needed to prove myself once again and this time I want to go all out.”

Joe De Sena, Spartan Race founder and CEO, comments on Mills’ recent decision to participate in the Death Race. “Michael has exceeded many people’s expectations already, and we are proud to call him a Spartan. No one will be able to question his efforts after he takes on the Death Race.”
