The MultiSmart pump station manager, already widely specified in the U.S. and Australia, has been taking the UK water utilities by storm. MultiTrode are the specialists in pump station technology for water and wastewater utilities, and describe the MultiSmart as a comprehensive and intuitive solution that combines the best of a pump controller, a PLC and an RTU. The integration of these elements, along with many other control panel components, reduces the cost of lift station control panels and adds valuable asset data including energy & CO2 monitoring.
MultiTrode opened their UK office earlier this year, appointing Stuart Duncan as the General Manager. Mr. Duncan was originally from the UK water industry, having been a works manager for South West Water. More recently, he ran the MultiTrode distribution network in Australia from 2005 until taking up the MultiTrode UK position.
Interviewed at the IWEX show, Mr. Duncan had this to say:
"The water industry globally is a very conservative market and treads very cautiously with new technology. That's as it should be, of course, because these organisations deal with critical infrastructure and are regulated by government bodies to ensure environmental standards are met."
"However, we've found in some regions that 'conservative' means some larger organisations can become paralysed and never change even when there are millions of pounds to be saved," Duncan continued. "That's why it has been so refreshing to see how quickly the UK utilities have begun trialling the MultiSmart pump station manager. The combination of a complete pump controller with an integrated RTU and PLC capability gives the water industry the best of all worlds. Their motivation is the big reduction in capital cost of new and upgraded lift stations and the operational efficiencies they gain from having much more data available at SCADA."
"The industry has a need for condition-based monitoring and MultiSmart provides that. There is also a much stronger focus in the UK on reducing energy costs and CO2 emissions - an area where MultiSmart stands apart from any other solution," claimed Duncan. "In just a few months we've had half the UK water authorities begin to try out the product. Given that they typically have thousands of pump stations each, this shows the depth and capabilities of MultiSmart as well as being very exciting for our company."
