Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a devastating genetic disorder and this is our opportunity to raise awareness on behalf of Ryan's Quest.
Iselin, NJ (Vocus) July 31, 2009
Sanford-Brown Institute (SBI) will host its second-annual walkathon to benefit muscular dystrophy research on Thursday, August 20. The event will kick off at 12 noon at Grove 1 of the Roosevelt Field (in Edison, New Jersey) and is open to the public. In 2008, more than 300 walkers participated in its inaugural event. The goal is to increase public participation in support of Ryan's Quest.
Ryan's Quest is a non-profit organization that was founded by David and Maria Schultz, after learning of their two-year old son's diagnosis of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). DMD is the most common lethal, genetic disorder diagnosed during early childhood. It affects one out of every 3,500 boys. It is a progressive muscle disorder that causes the loss of muscle function and independence. Typically, boys affected by DMD will lose their ability to walk between the ages of 8 and 14, require respiratory support by their late teens and survive only into their 20s. To date, there is no cure.
"The faculty and students at Sanford-Brown Institute have developed a personal connection to this local organization," said Dennis Mascali, president. "Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a devastating genetic disorder and this is our opportunity to raise awareness on behalf of Ryan's Quest."
The Sanford-Brown team is actively seeking participants, food and beverage vendors and other sponsors to participate in the Ryan's Quest walkathon.
