On Friday, May 16, Full Sail University welcomed rapper, actor, producer, radio personality, author and business innovator, Chuck D. to its campus. Chuck visited Full Sail to address students, staff and faculty in the Music Business, Recording Arts and Entertainment Business Degree Programs.
During his discussion at Full Sail, Chuck urged the students in the audience to become what he called "Artcademics," which is a term he coined to express the need for upcoming members of the industry to redefine their academic skills, continue to be true to their art, and find inspiration from the past, present and future.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design, Chuck D. transitioned into the realm of music making when he formed the groundbreaking Rap group, Public Enemy, who reached fame in the 1980's. As the principal songwriter and main vocalist, Chuck brought in front man Flavor Flav and Public Enemy released a string of hit albums including 1987's Yo! Bum Rush the Show, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, 1988; Fear of a Black Planet, 1990; Apocalypse 91...The Enemy Strikes Black, 1991; Greatest Misses, 1992; Muse Sick-N-Hour Mess Age, 1994; and in1998, they released the full-length album soundtrack for the motion picture, He Got Game starring Denzel Washington.
Chuck D. also has been a vocal supporter of music on the Internet and file sharing. This is evident in his work with Rapstation.com, a website that houses a multi-format hip hop community that spans the globe. Known for his outspoken lyrics and political activism, Chuck continues to make appearances on TV, radio and college campuses nationwide discussing his vast industry experience and upcoming plans for the future.
"Full Sail University believes in providing unique experiences for our students. Having the opportunity to have Chuck D. visit our campus and share his knowledge with our students was an incredible and memorable experience for all" said Program Director of Music Business, Tim Gregory. "The ability to interact with a noted professional in the industry is just another benefit that sets Full Sail's curriculum apart from other programs."
