On BEAT100, I have been exposed to people from all genres that I would never otherwise have had a chance to meet… and I’m on every other social networking platform available!

A recent second place winner of the BEAT100 Original Music Chart, UK based hip-hip producer, Configa, quickly became a top artist on the music video social network this past month. After uploading his brilliant production of ‘We On Fire’, featuring Jaz Kahina, Configa received over 14,000 views and 4,000 votes, along with overwhelming support from the BEAT100 community in just a few short weeks. In a music production age dominated by synthetic sounds and beats, Configa maintains traditional hip-hop roots, creating organic beats and grooves using his technical mastery of sampling live instruments. Paired with his years of experience as a successful battle rapper, Configa’s music and style is simply irresistible for even those individuals not typically fond of modern hip-hop.
As a kid, Configa took note of Pete Tong’s Radio 1 showcase of the Jungle Brothers and collective hip-hop group Native Tongues, pursuing his own career as a battle rapper under the alias, ‘Unique’. By the year 2000, Unique released his debut album following years of creating mix tapes and selling them on the street and at freestyle battles. As his experience and success escalated, ‘Unique’ rebranded himself ‘Configa’ and began focusing full-time on the production aspect of hip-hop. Configa released his debut album in 2006 as a collaborative effort with like-minded producers and has since established himself as an award winning and critically acclaimed artist with a true talent for sampling and production.
Though many artists in the hip-hop scene classify his releases as “underground” and a subdivision of hip-hop dubbed “boom bap”, Configa’s style is actually the norm. Emulating traditional hip-hop influences originating from New York in the 80’s and 90’s, Configa’s release of ‘We On Fire’ demonstrates his ability to capture the ‘heart’ of hip-hop, as the track mixes an incredible blend of numerous samples, including vibraphone, blues guitar, jazz vocals, pizzicato strings, and organ accompanied by bass and percussive elements to create the perfect groove for Jaz Kahina’s lyrics. “I love other forms of music too, I’m extremely eclectic – especially because most of my work is sample based,” says Configa. “I’m exposed to lots of weird and wonderful music when ‘crate digging’ - be it Norwegian folk, or 60’s psychedelic rock. If it sounds good, then it sounds good, regardless of genre or location.” Configa’s careful consideration and review of music across a full-spectrum of genres is certainly noticeable, as his selection of samples is impeccable throughout his discography.
In addition to a busy daily production schedule, Configa recently achieved his PhD following the publication of a thesis focusing on hip-hop from a sociological aspect. “I’ve always loved music,” says Configa, “[It’s] my first love. Something about the rhythm just struck a chord in me and I’ve been addicted ever since.” As he continues to follow his passion in producing hip-hop, BEAT100 members can follow Configa on the music video social network in order to stay up to date with upcoming video uploads from this talented producer.
Members can also upload their own original or cover music videos to the BEAT100 Music Video Charts this month for a chance to join the ranks of past BEAT100 chart winners. “I have found my experience [on BEAT100] very rewarding indeed,” explained Configa. “I have been exposed to people from all genres that I would never otherwise have had a chance to meet… and I’m on every other social networking platform available!”
