Taylor Collins is a professional singer-songwriter and four-piece band from Long Beach, CA, whose upload of Bon Iver’s, “Spider In The Blossom” is climbing the BEAT100 Music Video Chart at a rapid pace. The upload received two BEAT100 Gold Awards for their impressive performance qualities and professional video. The band also received a BEAT100 Silver Favourite Award, which can be awarded by any member of the BEAT100 Team who feels the video is a great addition to the network. “We have definitely enjoyed our experience [on BEAT100] thus far, and it has definitely grown our fan base in only a short time,” says Collins. “The results and goals are tangible and within reach, so we are excited for what else it has to offer.”
Before the band became a collaborative project, Taylor Collins embarked on a musical journey as a soloist, where he recorded several demos and performed at family gatherings or coffee houses. He was immersed in music at a young age due to the long line of Jazz musicians on his father’s side of the family. Taylor soon learnt to play a few instruments and joined the Jazz band in high school, which helped him discover his true calling and passion for the art. “It really helped fortify a solid foundation for me and I discovered early on that music wasn’t merely a hobby,” Collins tells BEAT100. Artists, such as The Beatles, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash, among a long list of other highly talented musicians, heavily influenced Collins and he soon began to write his own original songs with this inspiration in mind. “I began writing my own music at 15 after I received my first acoustic guitar and then started performing.”
After meeting like-minded musician and sound engineer, Spencer Baldwin (drummer/percussionist), they soon turned the act into a full band and have released three records together, along with John Lutfalah (lead guitar/vocals) and Spencer Collins (bass guitar), since their formation in 2008. Their release of their latest music EP, “The Phoenix”, has thus far been their greatest achievement as they feel they have finally discovered their true sound as a band. “It hasn’t been easy, and every step along the road has been a struggle, but it has been worth it”, says Collins. “There have been times of doubt, times of question and times of utter discouragement, but somehow we managed to keep out heads up and it will pay off in the end.”
Over a period of four years, the Taylor Collins band has come a long way from where they first began. “We have worked extremely hard for years to hone in on a unified sound”, states Collins. “For us, ‘The Phoenix’ EP serves as a blueprint going forward and a basis for future musical endeavours to come. It marked the beginning of a new chapter for the collective of ‘Taylor Collins’.” Although the music industry is a struggle for anyone, the Taylor Collins band maintain a optimistic attitude and continue to work through any obstacles that come their way. “Our persistence has culminated in some amazing shows, friendships, and connections that continue to grow,” says Taylor. “I can’t really tell you how we got to where we are because we really are still just starting, but after all this time we still have faith hope and belief in what we are doing.”
