A well-known singer-songwriter from the northeast of England has joined the increasingly popular BEAT100 Music Video Network. Martha Cook, 22, who now lives in London, is well known in her hometown of Hartlepool after spending several years there "learning her craft" on the local music scene.
The young singer has been in and around music for most of her life and began writing her own songs whilst still a teenager. Although most of her own songs are best described as 'dark love songs', she also enjoys much heavier, indie style music after being in several bands, and is a very accomplished musician. Pleasing for the BEAT100 Music Video Network, Martha has recently began posting some home videos of herself performing some of her self-penned numbers on webcam, including her latest track 'The Last Time' which has now entered the BEAT100 Original Charts.
"I've been writing for 7 years now. I wrote a song with my older brother when I was 16 and a promoter heard it via MySpace, and invited us to perform at a gig in Newcastle and that’s how I got started," explained Martha. "My most memorable moment so far is a gig I did a few months back in a tiny pub, completely acoustic, and the audience were so appreciative. It was a lovely atmosphere and I felt amazing. Best moment of my performing career so far!"
Martha explained to BEAT100 how she writes her music, her influences and style. "I would describe my songs as, sometimes happy, mostly dark, and tremendously honest,” says Martha. "My BEAT100 entry, The Last Time, is about complicated relationships. I'm just going to keep writing songs. My aim is to write a couple of happy songs and then release my E.P.... and then I'll write more. I love writing! I can do covers also. Generally I cover pop songs, but in my own style"
"I decided to upload a couple of my songs to the BEAT100 Network as I think it's the perfect place for someone like me to get noticed,” says Martha. “Sites such as BEAT100 enable artists to promote themselves without cost and to share our music". Also on Martha's BEAT100 page is another song she wrote called 'Mirrors' and that too is really worth a listen. Her voice is something really special and her writing style extremely intelligent for one so young.
