“We want to write the best music we can, have the best time performing it for people who like what we do, and get our music heard by as many people as possible!”

Recent winners of the BEAT100 ‘Ultimate Musician’ Award, the most prominent award provided to musicians on the music video social network, South African band Asleep in Transit provides the BEAT100 community with their melodic and authentic sound in original release ‘Brothers, Sisters’. Though often dubbed as ‘indie-pop’, Asleep in Transit’s fans tend to avoid any strict classification of the band’s unique and eclectic sound. “I think it’s just a case of people liking it for what it is, and not stopping to try and classify it,” says Allister, the band’s guitarist and singer. Listeners of ‘Brothers, Sisters’, or any of the bands releases, are immediately drawn into the ensembles beautiful blend of instrumentation and vocals, typically consisting of a duet between Allister and lead singer Irina, as well as the group’s emotional and meaningful lyrics. The band proves a true sensation and certainly worthy of BEAT100 ‘Ultimate Musician’ status.
The five-piece band, consisting of Allister on guitar and vocals, Irina on vocals, tambourine, and shaker, Josh on bass, Vlad on synths, keys, and occasionally guitar, and Justin Grady on drums, formed in Durban, South Africa after Irina met Allister following high school. Hearing Irina sing for the first time, Allister felt she was the right vocalist for some songs he was writing at the time - songs 'Asleep In Transit' currently perform. Allister, Irina, and Irina’s brother, Vlad, made it their focus to pursue music and formed Asleep in Transit together. “I had always been writing music,” says Allister, “this was the project I wanted to start. We just wanted to make music and still do. It’s just now awesome that we can share it with a lot of people who love what we’re doing!”
In reviewing any of Asleep in Transit’s current releases, listeners are attracted to the band’s emotional and ‘folk-like’ lyrics, as each song tells a meaningful and captivating story. When engaging in the song writing process, Allister acts as Asleep in Transit’s primary songwriter, as he has a true talent for writing appealing lyrics. When asked how he finds inspiration for the bands' songs, Allister says: “Dreams, memories… I think of a story and then write a song about that image.” The bands' popular BEAT100 release, ‘Brothers, Sisters’, “…is about the sun and the moon being in love, but never being able to be together, because they can never meet,” he says. In fact, every song from the band's newest EP, ‘Kaleidoscope’, released in December 2012, provides a meaningful message. For example, “’Plans’ is about a girl wanting to leave a place and grow, ‘Beat, Beat, Beat’ about Pinnochio falling in love, and ‘Sirens’ describing a mental image of two people lying down facing each other and [singing] about what’s going on through their heads,” describes Allister. Each song provides a heartfelt duet between Irina and Allister, consisting of beautiful harmonies flowing gracefully together, accompanied by a consistent energetic and uplifting performance from the band.
‘Kaleidoscope’, and all of Asleep in Transit’s music, is available for free download from the band’s personal website (http://www.asleepintransit.com), Facebook, and Soundcloud page, or as a direct download from Mediafire (Download the band’s 2012 EP online here). The band encourages BEAT100 users to download the music and share it with friends. “If you like [the EP], let us know,” says Allister, “We would love to connect with you, wherever you are in the world.”
Asleep in Transit are currently working on an upcoming full-length album, set for release towards the end of 2013, as well as a new music video and documentary for South African TV discussing the process in writing and releasing their original EP, ‘Kaleidoscope’. The band also continues to tour and perform, with their next performance scheduled at Park Acoustics in Pretoria, South Africa on July 28. In discussing their future goals, Asleep in Transit says, “We want to write the best music we can, have the best time performing it for people who like what we do, and get our music heard by as many people as possible!”
