Our mission has always been to present high-quality, but affordable, family entertainment

Since 1998, Oakland Musical Theater, Woodminster Summer Musicals' popular Kids Come Free program has always been supported by contributions from corporations and foundations. But in 2012, the loss of a major funder has prompted Producers Associates to seek community support to continue the program, which offers free tickets to children and teens 16 and younger who are accompanied by paying adults to any regular theater performance. In order to raise the $25,000 necessary to keep the program alive, the musical theater will be hosting a 2012 fundraising campaign, beginning on May 6 with a live performance of "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown."

“Our mission has always been to present high-quality, but affordable, family entertainment. Live theater, especially musical theater, has become so expensive to produce that a lot of families have simply been priced out of the experience,” Harriet Schlader, managing director of Woodminster Summer Musicals said. “With Kids Come Free, a family can see live professional musical theater for about the cost of an evening at the movies. We are committed to continuing this program, and we think our audiences will help us do that."

Woodminster Summer Musicals’ productions are performed at Woodminster Amphitheater, an open-air performance facility in Joaquin Miller Park. The park's spectacular views and serene woodsy environment makes it the perfect setting for the amphitheater, cascades, reflecting pool and paths that were originally built as a WPA project from 1939 to 1940.

In 2012, the musical theater will be performing "Fiddler On The Roof" from July 13 to 22, "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum" from Aug. 10 to 19 and "Cats" from Sept. 7 to 16. All shows begin at 8 p.m., except for September performances on Thursdays and Sundays that begin at 7 p.m. Adult tickets are $27 to $56, with discounts available for senior citizens and groups.

For tickets and inquiries, or to make a donation to the Kids Come Free program, call 510-531-9597 or view the musical theater on the web at woodminster.com.
