Woodminster Summer Musicals, now on its 45th season of presenting musical theater in Oakland, is welcoming Bruce Winant as Tevye during this summer’s production of “Fiddler on the Roof.” The live performances will be held from July 13 to 15 and from July 19 to 22 at 8 p.m. at the Woodminster Amphitheater in Joaquin Miller Park.

“Tevye is one of the most memorable and powerful roles in musical theater, so casting the right actor is crucial,” Kathy Kahn of Woodminster Summer Musicals said.

Winant will be playing the role of Teyve, a pious dairyman and the father of five girls who strives to maintain his family and Jewish traditions within the setting of early 20th century Czarist Russia. Based on the story, “Teyve and His Daughters” by Sholem Aleichem, which was published in Yiddish in 1894, “Fiddler on the Roof” presents universal themes of family, tradition, marriage, love, race, class, regret and hope.

Bruce Wimant is an actor who has played many key roles in various musical theater performances, including the original productions of “Miss Saigon,” “Ragtime,” “My Favorite Year” and “Chicago.” He has also appeared in other productions, such as the Tony Award-winning revival of “La Cage Aux Folles,” “Les Miserables,” “Twelfth Night” and “Man of La Mancha,” among many others. He has likewise appeared on the episodes of the popular television shows “Blue Bloods,” “Law and Order: SVU,” and “The West Wing.” He has lent his voice to animated characters in movies like “Ice Age,” “Robots” and “Mighty Aphrodite.”

“Come early and enjoy a picnic, a walk in Joaquin Miller Park and the beautiful bay views with your family,” Kahn said. “As the sun sets, take your seats in the outdoor theater and enjoy an evening of music and magic under the stars.”
