When World War II erupted in Europe, author Jennie E. Smith witnessed the honorable sacrifices made by the men and women on her homeland of Prince Edward Island off the coast of Canada. The war left a heavy impact on her, and she began writing poetry to better express her feelings.

Smith’s new collection of poetry, “My Book of Poems: Reflections of a young maiden’s life on PEI during WWII” (published by Lulu), which is being published posthumously by her daughter, Robin Nowell Hartery, revisits this tumultuous period in Smith’s life.

Smith’s poetic style mirrors that of Prince Edward Island native Lucy Maud Montgomery, noted author of the “Anne of Green Gables” and its sequels. Smith’s poems present her innermost feelings on God, her family, the natural wonders of her island home and the many sacrifices made both on the home front and in Europe for the war effort.

An excerpt from “To Our Island Home” featured in “My Book of Poems”:

“In this fair province of our own,
We’re proud to call Our Island Home.
With shady lanes and sunny nooks,
And all you read about in books.”
