From Mykisha Mac, author of The Love of a Good Man, comes the first of an edgy, sci-fi series. Introducing Star IV is an other-worldly fantasy book that takes real, controversial issues for its compelling plot, leaving sci-fi readers and young adults with a powerful story with an equally powerful message. While revolving around the theme of self-love and confidence, Mac’s book also sheds light on issues such as child abuse, foster care systems throughout the world, infant loss, miscarriage, and bullying.

“I was feeling powerless in a world filled with needless crimes. So I created a woman (character) who is strong, beautiful, and very powerful. She could use her power to help children who were being abused and somehow come to find her own true purpose in life,” shares Mac, when asked about the inspiration of her new book. “A woman with a plan is a very dangerous woman,” she playfully quips.

Mac’s novel is primarily set in New York. A star from the midnight galaxy comes to earth and blends with the humans and finds and accepts her true calling. She (Star IV) attacks crime with a vengeance and anybody who gets in her way. Her heart shines like a beacon of light toward the innocent (children). She does everything in her power to make sure children at the adoption agency where she works at, are placed in a loving home. If anyone were to harm them (children) past or present, Star IV seeks retaliation.

This story is the “introduction” of Candace Carpenter, the main character who is later known as Star IV. It tells how she fell out of the midnight galaxy and came into existence from a star to a human being. She is given tasks to complete by Asteria, the Goddess of fallen stars. Asteria guides Star IV through it all and helps her accept her birth right and purpose for being. Jason, her colleague, adds a tinge of romance to the tale. Pyper Petterson, a troubled orphan girl whom Candace takes under her wing, helps clarify the through line developing in the story.

As child abuse becomes prevalent in many places, Introducing Star IV addresses concerns that some people find taboo to talk about such as the realms of the church and the system of child care or foster care. Mac has indeed creatively crafted a novel that speaks to the hearts of children and young people and guides them in their journey to feel deeply accepted and loved, and eventually build a solid self-esteem.
