The National Association of Professional Women - L.A. Chapter hosted a morning networking meeting event on October 19th, 2011

Chapter President Ruth Garcia-Corrales, Advertising & Marketing Manager for La Curacao and former Consul General of Costa Rica, welcomed all members of NAPW of Los Angeles Chapter. As in every meeting the group had several L.A. area NAPW members attending for the first time.

The topic of discussion for October’s meeting was Leadership. Ruth introduced guest speaker Mike Danneker who has been the Director of the Regional Center, WRC for 25 years. He has fostered the best in his staff and those with developmental disabilities whom they serve.

Mike cited good intuition, a good belief system/values, integrity, humility and passion for one’s work as qualities of a leader. He emphasized the importance of having a sense of humor about one’s self and others. He advised having a belief in those you work with, trusting them to do their job, and not defining the tasks too narrowly.

“Essentially, successful leadership is all about relationships—getting along with others, many types of characters, being a hard worker, being able to motivate people and giving others freedom to be and grow,” he said.

He advised us to be who you are, to find good people and people who fit your style, to admit when you are wrong and repair the mistake. A final key ingredient that has worked so very well at WRC is flexibility—of hours, styles, and performance.

He responded to many questions about WRC and the developmental disability system, explaining that there is strength in numbers—the system having come about as a result of the work of seven parents. The system is a $4 billion industry, and has been cut $1 billion recently. Outside of Scandinavian countries, it is the most successful in the world. WRC is proud that the 245k developmentally disabled individuals served by the system are provided with appropriate services, are living in the community, and are living up to their potentials.

Our next evening meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, November 16th, 6:00-8:00 PM at Factors Deli, 9420 West Pico Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90035. Valet parking is available for $3. The topic for this session will be “Does your style work for you”. With so many Executives and Business owners in the group this topic is essential. We look forward to seeing you all there.
