Members and guests of the NAPW Norfolk, VA Local Chapter gathered July and August for professional networking meetings where plans were discussed and finalized for the Chapter’s official launch to be held on October 20th. Originally called ‘Putting on the Ritz,’ the event theme is now ‘Celebrate the Children’ and will focus on raising funds for the Down Syndrome Association of Hampton Roads (DSAHR). The nonprofit charitable organization supports local families and persons with Down Syndrome.

“We are hoping to raise $20,000 for DSAHR at our Chapter launch, which will be a public event and party that will increase networking opportunities, raise Chapter participation and awareness, attract new members, and, of course, raise money for a very worthwhile cause,” said Chapter President Ivory Morgan-Burton.

At the July and August networking meetings, the Chapter President welcomed everyone to the PNC Building at Military Circle Mall. She distributed name tags, announced the need for volunteers for a number of Chapter Board positions including Treasurer and Vice President, and invited all attendees to introduce themselves to the audience.

For the duration of the meetings, plans were discussed and finalized for the upcoming Chapter launch event that will be held on October 20th from 11:00am to 4:00pm. The event will have a silent auction and other activities to raise funds for the Down Syndrome Association of Hampton Roads.

“The launch event promises to be both fun and productive with plenty of things to do for kids and adults,” said Ivory. “We will be highlighting participating businesses with vendor tables, holding a silent auction, and selling calendars that feature the children of the DSAHR.”

Cheryl Davis, President of the Chesapeake, VA Local Chapter agreed to support the event and will inquire if other NAPW Local Chapters would be willing to do the same. Many Norfolk, VA Chapter members have stepped forward to ensure the Chapter launch event will be a success: Yvette Williams will work on obtaining a list of names for donations for the event and silent auction; Debra Byers will write a letter of request for potential donations; Shenisse Shumake and Debra Byers will assist in finding an event venue; Amy Kretzer will handle bookkeeping and financial matters; Cynthia Gossman will act as the DSAHR liaison; and Jenna Agnello will contact Minuteman Press about providing printing and graphic services. The Chapter President will continue to network and find support with program details and realtor Earl Byers will be approached about offering support from his real estate affiliations.

The next Norfolk, VA Local Chapter meeting is set for September 20th.
