Members and guests of the NAPW Mesa, AZ Local Chapter gathered on January 23rd for a monthly networking meeting.

The group of professional women who were in attendance heard a highly effective presentation on the benefits of setting goals and how best to achieve them from Chapter member Karen Belyan, President of Essential Training Workshops, LLC, and host of the January event.

After welcoming members and guests to the NAPW Mesa Local Chapter networking meeting, Chapter President Patti Oskvarek briefly spoke about her 2013 goals for the Chapter that include helping members understand how they can showcase themselves and/or their businesses on NAPW’s social media sites using the local Chapter Page on and the Chapter Facebook Page and Twitter.

“Be sure to check the Chapter Page regularly for updates on meeting dates, as well as other member’s posts about their business events, products, and services,” she said.

“I will be using Twitter to offer inspirational quotes, as well as updates on meeting, etc.”

In keeping with her commitment to have Chapter members, as well as representatives from the community, present at Chapter meetings, Patti presented the meeting’s host and guest speaker, member Karen Belyan, the President of Essential Training Workshops, LLC ‘Living to Learn and Learning to Live.’

“Today’s guest speaker is a Professional Educational Trainer/Facilitator, and she has owned her own business for 15 years, providing consulting, training, and coaching services to her clients,” said Patti.

“Karen presented the featured topic, ‘The Art of S.M.A.R.T. Goals,’” said the Chapter President.

“She talked about the benefits of having goals, shared some techniques on setting them, and how to succeed in achieving those goals.”

The guest speaker spoke about ‘SMART Goals:’ S = Specific; M = Measurable; A = Action; R = Realistic; and T = Time. She also talked about the benefits of setting goals: (1) for motivation; (2) to accomplish something; and (3) for direction, as well as the struggles of setting goals: (1) unrealistic; (2) fear of success or failure; (3) don’t know how; and (4) don’t have time or commitment.

“Use affirmations to encourage your goals. Create them by using the present tense and action verbs.

Use recognition to award yourself for the little accomplishments you make towards your goals, and also when you achieve your goals!” Karen told the group of professional women.
