According to a report written on the 13th of January 2015 from NewsOK.com the death toll has just risen to 72 people that lost their lives when they consumed contaminated alcohol in Mozambique. Along with those there are dozens that are now hospitalized, including several in critical condition after drinking. The problem started when individuals came into the ER complaining of diarrhea and muscle pain. Doctor’s are now calling the issue a health crisis.

The contaminated alcohol was said to be brewed from millet or corn flour and may have been poisoned with crocodile bile.

Contaminated alcohol is alcohol that has some type of additive or ingredient in it such as bacteria that can cause serious illness or death. A Who Inc. Global Status Report from 2011 suggest that contaminated alcohol is a common and unrecorded health problem both in the Unites States and particularly abroad.

Research from the Who Inc. report suggests that methanol, a highly toxic chemical found in drain cleaner, paint stripper and antifreeze, is also a common alcohol contaminant.

Handling Alcoholism

As with alcohol use, alcohol contamination can affect a user more seriously, the more they drink. Narconon Arrowhead warns individuals to look for signs of alcohol contamination. Symptoms include severe and chronic headaches, difficulty breathing, diarrhea, eye problems and blindness, kidney failure, coma and death. The onset of alcohol contamination symptoms begins 40 minutes to 72 hours after drinking.
