Narconon Drug Prevention Celebrates Four Decades Serving Communities Across Six Continents
Preserving the concept of 'drug-free communities' is as important to Narconon as saving the lives of alcohol and other drug addicts.
(PRWEB) May 14, 2009 -- Narconon International has just released a colorful 36-page brochure honoring the scope of its community collaboration drug prevention activities worldwide. "Enjoy this celebration of good works," said Clark Carr, president of the Narconon headquarters located in Hollywood, California. He was speaking to a recent gathering of one hundred Narconon center executive directors. "This is good news where good news is needed."

The theme of the "Serving Our Community" brochure is collaboration and volunteerism. Quoting L. Ron Hubbard, the philosopher and humanitarian on whose work the drug rehabilitation and education program is based, Carr read from the brochure "A community that pulls together can make a better society for all." Thousands of children may start using drugs today, the brochure says - "Join with us in neighborhood efforts to create drug-free communities."
So what have Narconon staff and volunteers been doing in their communities? Much more than educating hundreds of thousands of children with live drug ed presentations yearly. In Honduras, for example, one U.S. Narconon center provided special training to the staff of a shelter and school for homeless children, many of whom were addicted to inhalants. "To glue," said Carr. "Like street children the world over, these kids sniff glue which damages their brains, stunts their growth, and makes learning new things a real challenge for them." To help its own recovering drug addicts, the Narconon drug rehabilitation program incorporates a special regimen of exercise, vitamin and mineral therapy, and repetitive periods of sweating in low-heat dry saunas. The purpose is to reduce the body burden of drug and other toxic residuals. This procedure, Carr added, is exactly what the Honduran school needed to help those hurt kids detoxify themselves from the persistent effects of the noxious inhalants."The results have been outstanding," he said. "Children with anti-social behavior have become more social, learning skills are improving, and the kids are just plain happier."
The Narconon brochure's high toned content paints a detailed portrait of widely varying community collaborations. A 5000 person march against drugs down the main street of Kathmandu. "This is really not about us," said Carr. "It's promoting that something CAN be done. We must not give up on safe and drug-free communities. When we band together, we can change conditions for the better."
