Dallas, TX (Vocus/PRWEB) November 29, 2010
Statistics from the Obesity Society show that of the 17 million Americans diagnosed with diabetes, 90% have Type II, which is typically linked to obesity and physical inactivity. This November is American Diabetes Month®, and this year’s theme is titled “How Will You Stop Diabetes®? The Future is in Your Hands.” Last year, the American Diabetes Association set an ambitious goal of reaching 1 million members of the Stop Diabetes movement, with nearly 900,000 members pledging their support. This year, board-certified weight loss surgeon Dr. David Kim and former Dallas Cowboys star Nate Newton are continuing to support the movement with the help of every patient at Dr. Kim’s bariatric surgery practice.
The development of Type II diabetes is directly linked to body weight and body fat, which means people who are overweight are at a much greater risk for developing the disease than individuals that maintain the recommended body mass index. Despite the objectives defined and supported by Healthy People 2010—a program that encourages the U. S. population to pursue good health—the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports obesity remains a significant public health problem. According to data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), no state met the objective to reduce the proportion of adults who are obese to 15% as defined by Healthy People 2010, and 30 states were 10 or more percentage points away from the goal.
The good news is that diabetes is both preventable and curable. According to Dr. Kim, bariatric surgery cures diabetes in up to 95% of cases with gastric bypass, and up to 85% of cases with the gastric sleeve (vertical sleeve gastrectomy) procedure. Following his weight loss surgery, Nate Newton tracked his journey on Dr. Kim’s Facebook page as he lost over 175 pounds and was cured of Type 2 diabetes. This November as Dr. Kim and Nate Newton continue to raise awareness for American Diabetes Month®, Dr. Kim says that regardless of whether his patients are considering weight loss procedures such as the LAP-BAND® System or a vertical sleeve gastrectomy, successful weight loss comes from making healthy lifestyle changes.
As Dr. Kim promotes the Stop Diabetes message this November, he is quick to remind his patients that the fight against obesity and diabetes requires dedication and conviction from everyone involved. The Nate Newton weight loss journey is a great example of the experience, as the audience is given an inside look at the number of moving parts his patients and their families must commit to if they are serious about permanent weight loss. “Proper nutrition, daily exercise, and a properly constructed operation are key elements in curing Diabetes Type II.”
