The National Hall of Records today announced the launch of a new online obituary service to help families remember and honor their loved ones.

"Our purpose is to afford every person the opportunity to permanently archive their family's heritage," Lynn Mitchell, Executive Director of the National Hall of Records said. "We are working in partnership with funeral service providers across America to provide this help to families. And in today's very mobile society, a central online location allows family and friends to participate in honoring a life regardless of where they live."

The obituary service was introduced at the National Funeral Directors Association annual convention in Las Vegas in October. More than three hundred funeral homes immediately joined with the National Hall of Records as Official Members, and more have since enrolled. Member funeral homes provide their families with information to access these services.

The National Hall of Records provides a comprehensive online repository of obituaries and death notices. Through an affiliation with the Social Security Administration and Member funeral homes, NHOR has compiled more than 80 million death records. This enables the organization to provide families a way to permanently archive and preserve the memories of their loved ones. Anyone can post photographs, sign the Guest Book, and create Lasting Tributes for their friends or family members.
