Even though North Carolina ranks among the country’s top 10 states for fewest workplace injuries, there is room for improvement, says the managing partner of Hardison & Cochran.

The state’s steadily low number of workplace injuries year after year means workplace safety has increased. That’s something to celebrate. However, even one injury is one too many.

Ben Cochran, the managing partner of the Hardison & Cochran law firm in Raleigh, today called upon North Carolina employers to build on efforts that have led to a low number of workplace injuries in the state over the last three years.

“The state’s steadily low number of workplace injuries year after year means workplace safety has increased. That’s something to celebrate,” Cochran said. “However, even one injury is one too many. We need to stay sharply focused on the safety of our work sites in North Carolina and enhance our efforts to reduce workplace accidents.”

Cochran is a Board Certified Specialist in Workers’ Compensation Law. He spoke in reaction to a news release from the N.C. Department of Labor(NCDL) that contained workplace accident figures for 2012.

The NCDL quotes U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics figures that say the latest injury and illness rate for private industry in North Carolina remains at an all-time low of 3.1 per 100 full-time workers. The injury and illness rate has remained 3.1 for the past three years.

Based on the BLS’s figures, North Carolina remains one of the top 10 safest states in which to work, the NCDL says.

The NCDL also reported a 34 percent drop in N.C. workplace fatalities in 2012 compared to 2011. Thirty-five jobsite deaths occurred during the year compared to 53 in 2011. In 2010, there were 50 work deaths in North Carolina.

According to the NCDL, the department’s Occupational Safety and Health Division (OSH) worked closely in 2012 with some of the state’s most hazardous industries and also issued hazard alerts regarding forklifts, struck-by accidents, heat stress and firefighter safety after identifying problems in those areas.

The Hardison & Cochran law firm represents North Carolina workers in workers’ compensation cases and personal injury lawsuits. The firm also provides legal help to families of deceased workers in workers’ compensation death benefits claims and wrongful death actions.

“Anytime there is a workplace accident resulting in serious injury, it is crucial to contact an attorney immediately to ensure one’s rights are protected,” Cochran said.
