Neglected wives, sick of being ignored by their football-obsessed partners, have discovered their own exciting way of playing away; seeking affairs at extramarital dating site IllicitEncounters.com.
The website, which has been running since 2003 and has almost half a million UK members, has seen a dramatic influx of women over the weekend, and online female activity soar by almost 150%. In addition, the daily average of new women joining the site has soared from 245 (May average) to 420 (since Thursday 10th).
In response to the surge, IllicitEncounters.com has created a quiz for those wives who feel side-lined by their husband’s indulgence in the football orgy, to help them identify just how ‘widowed’ they truly are. The ‘Are You A World Cup Widow?’ quiz is available for free download here.
In conjunction with the quiz, the site has created a tip sheet for WCWs on how to survive the month-long footie-fest, including advice on how to sabotage their husband’s attempts to watch the games.
One tip urges women to cripple their husbands with WAG-like spending; “Make a pact that every game he watches, you’ll get a treatment at your local spa. On his credit card. Quarter finals; pedicure. Semis; Indian head massage. Final; can no longer afford mortgage.”

Sara Hartley, site administrator, says the current surge is just the beginning; “Back in 2006, the last World Cup in Germany sent thousands of new female members tumbling our way. With the amount of press coverage we’ve had recently, I think we can expect record figures this year”.
Blogger Michelle Sutton, a regular at IllicitEncounters.com, explains that her husband’s obsession with sport was a primary reason in her decision to cheat; “My hubby loves to watch televised sport. When we were first married, it was a pastime, but now it’s an excuse he uses not to talk to me. I think any intense interest a man has, be it football or cars or fishing, can be used by him to ignore the fact there are potholes in his relationship. I have certainly experienced that first-hand.”
Sutton’s blog, ‘Confessions Of A Wayward Wife’, charts her extramarital affairs in an online diary, and was featured in Grazia magazine. The blog can be read here.
