Director, Matt Matzen and the crew of neon reel announce their nearly completed film, The Darkness and Tom Markos, as their 2012 entry into the Horrorfind Film Festival.
Principal photography for Tom Markos will wrap this week, pushing the project further to the editing table. Matzen, with the help of, assistant editor, Juan Montano, will pull together the scenes, incorporate some newly developed special effects, and add the final touches before submitting the piece, which is something the indie director is anticipating.
“This is the first full production we’ve worked with our new Canon 60D with follow focus system,” says Matzen. “It has proven to be a huge asset, not only in quality, but in accuracy of the shot as well.”
The most complex piece the crew has tackled to date, The Darkness and Tom Markos is written by Rob Talbert and Steve Shives and will feature Clayton Myers, of Heaven is Burning and Nothing Left to Do But Die. Myers will play Tom Markos, an ominous character that appears at the doorstep of Andy and Amber Miles to make an absurd offer. Andy and Amber, played by Steve Shives and Ashley Hutson, must decide in one evening if they believe a lifetime of religious truth or if faith is really what you make of it.
Production for The Darkness and Tom Markos is advancing tremendously on camera. Despite certain setbacks, Matzen and the crew remain optimistic of this piece being their most advanced yet.
“Behind the camera, the crew has suffered a little,” says Matzen. “Our location had to have some emergency remodeling during the shot and on top of that our sound technician lost his mother due to several sudden medical complications.”
As for the actors on set, the experience has been another growth experience. “The talent for Tom Markos in one word: phenomenal,” says Matzen. “It has been a pleasure working with Shives and Hutson. However, this is my first time working with, long time actor, Clayton Myers. Clayton is Tom Markos – end of story.”
Once completed, the crew will submit The Darkness and Tom Markos to Horrorfind Film Festival 2012 and will also setup a booth in the vendor’s area during the course of the convention to promote the film and meet others in the industry. After debuting in the independent film industry last year with The Black Eyed-Children, neon reel is preparing to return this year with a feature film that will excite audiences and prove to be a strong platform for future films.
“I and the rest of the crew at neon reel hope to take The Darkness and Tom Markos to the Horrofind Film Festival 2012,” says Matzen. “We have high hopes that it will help launch our name and guide us wisely into 2013.”
