New Jersey car accident lawyer Steven Benvenisti today lamented the fact that newly released statistics show that New Jersey had the largest increase in fatal car crashes in the country in 2011.

This week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released its final analysis of fatal car accidents in 2011 and said there was a 1.9 percent decrease nationally from 2010. The 32,367 deaths nationwide in 2011 were the fewest since 1949 and continued a trend in which car accident deaths have declined by 26 percent since 2005.

However, in New Jersey, car crash fatalities increased by 13 percent in 2011 compared to 2010, the NHTSA said. The state tied California for having the greatest increase in the number of fatalities, with both states recording 71 more fatalities in 2011 than in 2010.

“It’s a shame that the risk of being involved in a deadly car crash in New Jersey has actually gone up, which goes against the national trend,” said Benvenisti of the New Jersey personal injury firm of Davis, Saperstein & Salomon, P.C., which provides legal help to victims of New Jersey car accidents.

“It’s plain to see that New Jersey can and should do the work necessary to reduce the number of fatal car wrecks in our state,” Benvenisti said.

Benvenisti called for enhancing public education campaigns about the dangers of driving without a seat belt, drunk driving, distracted driving, speeding, drowsy / fatigued driving and other forms of negligent and reckless driving. He also said that it is important to provide law enforcement with the tools and resources to clamp down on careless and dangerous drivers.

“And certainly, we must hold drivers who endanger others fully accountable for their conduct through not only our criminal justice system but our civil justice system as well,” Benvenisti said.

“At Davis, Saperstein & Salomon, P.C., we will continue to tackle careless and reckless driving head-on and work for the day when New Jersey sees fewer fatal car accidents.”
