In many cases, these workplace accidents result from a disregard for the safety of our city’s construction workers. This event sends a message to the construction industry that worker safety is the number one priority.

A New York City lawyer who represents construction accident victims said this week that he fully supports the goal of the NYC Buildings Department’s upcoming Construction Safety Week.

“As an attorney who represents workers who have suffered construction injuries and families who have lost loved ones in construction site accidents, I’ve seen the tragic consequences that result from the failure to provide a safe working environment,” said Schwartzapfel, a founding lawyer of Schwartzapfel Partners P.C.

“The NYC Buildings Department should be commended for staging this event for the seventh consecutive year,” he said. “Hopefully, it will bring more attention to eliminating the leading causes of construction accidents, injuries and deaths: Dangerous working conditions and inadequate safety equipment.”

According to NYC Buildings Department data, New York City’s five boroughs comprise one of the busiest construction regions in the country, with the department issuing more than 136,000 construction permits in 2010.

However, the heavy construction activity has been accompanied by a high accident and fatality rate. The department reports that 157 construction-related accidents occurred in 2010, with 165 reported injuries and four deaths.

“Falls from roofs, ladders and scaffolding are all too common as well as injuries caused by falling objects, trench collapses, toxic fumes, electrocutions, explosions, fires and other construction site hazards,” Schwartzapfel said.

According to an agenda released last week by the NYC Buildings Department, the April 25-29 Construction Safety Week will include panel discussions on topics that include accident prevention, safety innovations and the safe use of scaffolds.

“In many cases, these workplace accidents result from a disregard for the safety of our city’s construction workers,” Schwartzapfel said. “This event sends a message to the construction industry that worker safety is the number one priority.

“Contractors who cut corners on safety know they will be held accountable when they violate the law and endanger the safety and well-being of workers and the general public."
