The all-inclusive, small group adventure explores the North Island’s unique volcanic terrain, geothermal areas, white sandy beaches, Maori culture and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, arguably the best mountain day-hike in New Zealand.

National Geographic Traveler named Active Adventures New Zealand’s ‘Kauri’ Essence of the North Island tour one of 50 tours of a lifetime in its May 2013 issue that is on newsstands now. The prestigious honor recognizes 2013’s most authentic, most innovative, most immersive, best-guided, and most sustainable tours.

The all-inclusive, small group adventure in New Zealand explores the North Island’s unique volcanic terrain, geothermal areas, white sandy beaches, Maori culture, the Hobbiton film set and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, arguably the best mountain day-hike in New Zealand. Other highlights of the fully guided adventure tour include mountain biking in the Whakarewarewa forest and hikes along coastal tracks to pristine beaches. The five-day tour is also a popular addition to Active Adventures’ South Island tours.

“After exploring the South Island on our ‘Rimu’ adventure, the ‘Kauri’ was a great way to fully understand and experience what the Maori culture is all about. The landscape was so different from the South Island. The variety of activities and the amazing meals really blew us away,” wrote Krystle Gonzalez (Ontario, Canada) of her trip in March.

National Geographic Traveler magazine has been recognizing the best tours and outfitters for travelers for the last eight years, as part of the magazine’s mission “to propel readers out of their armchairs and into the field.” Traveler has the largest audience of any travel magazine, with more than 8.5 million readers. Their readers have the highest passport ownership, most international and domestic trips, and most outdoor recreation spending of any other travel title.

National Geographic Traveler’s editorial team report that the selection process was very competitive this year and that they worked long and hard to find tours that push the boundaries of mainstream tourism, whether taking travelers to the far corners of the globe, or helping them dive deep into the culture of familiar destinations. “This year marks the 125th anniversary of the National Geographic Society. The tours we selected capture that spirit of exploration,” says executive editor Norie Quintos.
