Those dreaming of hiking New Zealand should keep an eye on new “Specials” listed by leading tour operator Active New Zealand on their website. The November 10-23 inaugural tour of their latest small group adventure, the 14-day New Zealand Explorer (nicknamed the “Kiwi” trip), is currently available at an introductory price of US$3799 + tax, a saving of $200 off the regular rate and falls conveniently over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

The “Kiwi” New Zealand Explorer is a two-week outdoor adventure with half-day and shorter hikes replacing some of the more challenging activities on Active’s signature New Zealand South Island tours (the “Rimu”). The “Kiwi” is designed to show off New Zealand’s wildly scenic South Island at a more relaxed pace and includes hiking in Abel Tasman National Park and an optional whale watching tour in Kaikoura, the first time the company has featured either activities.

“I often hear people say they’re worried about being fit enough, or fast enough, or able to keep up with the group. So we’ve designed the “Kiwi” trip to make the most of the amazing New Zealand outdoors while taking some of the pressure off the activity level, making our small group adventures accessible to even more people,” says Jodi Narbey, a travel specialist at Active New Zealand.

The first ever “Kiwi” tour will depart on November 10, 2012, featuring two of the company’s most experienced guides. Guide Lina has a solid record of leading amazing trips and will share her passion for her country and inspire even the weariest traveller. Her trusty co-guide, Alice, is a veteran at keeping the group smiling around every corner as well as cooking up good, hearty Kiwi fare for them each day.

Tour highlights include hiking in popular Abel Tasman National Park, visiting glaciers on the West Coast and experiencing the magic of Milford Sound with a choice of a kayaking tour suitable for all levels or a boat cruise. The inaugural tour will wrap up with a Thanksgiving feast to remember at remote Braemar Sheep Station under the watchful gaze of New Zealand’s highest mountain, Aoraki (Mt. Cook).

“We’ve got a few special treats lined up for the first departure and those joining us from the States should get home by the end of Thanksgiving weekend to regale family and friends with stories of their exciting adventure down under!” says Narbey.

The introductory offer is currently featured on the company’s new specials page on their website, along with any last-minute special fares available. There are also more “Kiwi” departures scheduled throughout the (Southern) summer season.
