New Murder-mystery Novel Reflects on Opioid Crisis, Morality Behind Gene Editing
GREENWICH, Conn. (PRWEB) January 23, 2019 -- When an immunologist receives a mystery invitation from her former mentor to conduct research, little does she know she is on the heels of a murder mystery in Carol Baum’s new novel, “Murder on the Mountaintop Leads the Way” (published by Archway Press). The book is available for purchase at: https://www.amazon.com/Murder-Mountaintop-Leads-Carol-Baum/dp/1480871192/.
Dr. Jessica Shepard is summoned to Montreal by a mysterious correspondence from her former mentor, the brilliant microbiologist, Dr. Kevin Grant, who has been involved in gene-editing research. A brutal murder leads Jessica to investigate a mystery, with the help of narcotics Inspector Alain Raynaud. The chase includes involvement by a wellness physician using unorthodox techniques, a mercenary psychic, and scientific researchers engaged in academic competition and jealousy.
Baum took inspiration from the opioid-dependency crisis. The novel raises ethical questions involving to what extent physicians and scientists hold responsibility in managing the crisis, as well as the morality behind scientific advances such as gene editing as a means of disease prevention and treatment.
“‘Murder on the Mountaintop Leads the Way’ (contains) elements of a police procedural, a cozy mystery, a romance, a travelogue, and a foodies book,” says Baum, adding that she strove to “raise ethical issues relevant in today’s society (while providing) an enjoyable reading experience. This is more likely to have a lasting impact.”
