Popular travel show Getaway, has named New Zealand ‘Country of Year’ 2008. Only the second country to receive the accolade, New Zealand has been recognised for its diversity as a holiday destination providing one of the best last minute holidays abroad as well as family package holidays. With its breathtaking scenery; abundant culture; gourmet food and wine and a seemingly unending list of unique experiences New Zealand is truly deserving of the Country of the Year award.

After spending 62 days out at sea, we could not have arrived in a more stunning landscape with more beautiful people.

Barry Eddington, Regional Manager, Tourism New Zealand, believes New Zealand is truly deserving of the award, "To be recognized as 'Country of the Year' makes us extremely proud. New Zealand has so much to offer visitors, especially those who are looking for a unique and diverse experience in one country."

He went on to say "Both the North & South Islands of New Zealand are distinctly different, boasting beautiful landscapes, adventure, luxury and a wide range of activities and events throughout the year. With so much to see and do, visitors will want to come back to New Zealand again and again."

Voting with their feet, close to 970,000* Australians have already visited New Zealand and discovered what makes it 'Country of the Year'. Many more visitors have visited to plan their next trip.

John Walsh, Executive Producer of Getaway believes New Zealand is an ideal destination for Australian budgets and travel times. "In our view, New Zealand ticks all the boxes of an ideal holiday location. New Zealand is raw and sophisticated at the same time," he said. "You just need to walk the Milford Track in Fiordland, and Cuba St in Wellington to see the wide diversity New Zealand has to offer."

Trans Tasman explorers, James Castrission and Justin Jones, became the first people to make their way successfully across the Tasman by kayak, earlier this year. Their experience of New Zealand has been an inspiration to them.

"New Zealand will always hold a special place in both our hearts," says James. "After spending 62 days out at sea, we could not have arrived in a more stunning landscape with more beautiful people."

With a friendly exchange rate and even friendlier locals, now is the perfect time for Australians to discover what makes their closest neighbour such a popular destination.
