Westport, CT (Vocus) June 19, 2009 –-
Newman’s Own, Inc. announces its ninth year of support to help feed the nation’s hungry through its shared initiative with the Ford Motor Company called the “Partnership for Hunger Relief.” The ambitious project benefits Feeding America’s nationwide network of food banks by providing a new fleet of refrigerated trucks each year to distribute nutritious, perishable food to hard-to-reach areas of the United States. A contribution of $200,000 this year marks a $1.8 million level of support from Newman’s Own, Inc., Paul Newman and the Newman’s Own Foundation to date. The continued funding for this vital initiative reflects the company’s continued pursuit of its mission for the common good, as first laid out by its founder Paul Newman in 1982.
What began with a phone call 10 years ago from Paul Newman to Ford Motor Company’s chairman, Bill Ford, with an appeal to help transport fundamental food to the hungry in rural America, has evolved into a fundamental nationwide alliance. In partnership with Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic food relief agency, the Partnership for Hunger Relief program has to date delivered an estimated 125 million pounds of food with its 82 refrigerated trucks in 38 states.
Newman’s Own, Inc., the Ford Motor Company and Feeding America, the leading domestic hunger relief agency, are resolved to continue this program as long as there is a need.
The 2009 program details will be announced in early fall when more new Partnership for Hunger Relief refrigerated trucks will be released to additional communities in need.
“The work of Feeding America reminds us of why Paul Newman created Newman’s Own in the first place: to do good through food. Newman’s Own is very proud to continue our support for a Partnership for Hunger Relief, especially during these difficult times. More trucks mean that more food is getting to where it is needed most,” according to Tom Indoe, president and chief operating officer of Newman’s Own, Inc.
“Before we received the truck from Ford and Newman’s Own, our food bank did not have a refrigerated vehicle to transport perishable food,” says Babbs S. Douglas, executive director of Feed the Valley Food Bank in Columbus, Georgia. “The truck allows us to bring nutritious, fresh produce and meat to those facing hunger in our community. It is a tremendous gift in these difficult times.”
