Police action that is divisive and perpetuates mistrust between communities and the officers hired to protect them should end.
New York, New York (PRWEB) August 29, 2012
A recent poll conducted by The New York Times revealed that 64 percent of New Yorkers believe the New York Police Department favors whites over blacks. David Perecman and New York civil rights lawyers at The Perecman Firm agree that the data exhibited evidence of a race problem.
Among the respondents to the poll, 80 percent of black New Yorkers said the police show racial favoritism and 48 percent of white New Yorkers agreed.
“This poll showed how NYPD actions divide the community along racial lines,” said New York civil rights lawyer David Perecman, founder of The Perecman Firm and ardent defender of civil rights.
At the center of the debate on NYPD race problems is the controversial stop-and-frisk policy, said The New York Times. The policy, which allows New York police officers to stop and frisk any person they perceive as suspicious, has been frequently criticized for the disproportionate number of blacks and Hispanics who were stopped and detained.
The NYPD made close to 700,000 stops in 2011. Approximately 85 percent of those stopped were black or Hispanic, reported The New York Times. The study found 55 percent of whites saying stop-and-frisks were ‘acceptable’, while 56 percent of blacks called it ‘excessive.’
“Police action that is divisive and perpetuates mistrust between communities and the officers hired to protect them should end,” said David Perecman, a civil rights violation lawyer in New York for over 30 years.
