Consumers plan to spend $796 million on friends (compared to $696 million in 2007), $561 million on children's classmates and teachers (compared to $474 million in 2007), and $417 million on co-workers (compared to $339 million in 2007).

Even man's best friend is getting in on the love. 17.2 percent of survey responders who celebrate Valentine's Day also plan to buy gifts for their pets. Valentine's Day spending for pets is estimated to reach $367 million.
