US Sports Camps Director and Rochester University’s head coach Margaret Yerdon-Grange stresses the importance for pitchers of staying composed on the mound and offers her expertise on how controlling emotions needs to be incorporated into a pitcher’s practice.
“Having a pitcher that can control the game can make the difference between a good team and a great team. Young pitchers need to learn that this begins in practice. We work hard to teach our pitchers that you play how you practice. That means we need to bring the same intensity and focus to every pitching workout,” Yerdon-Grange states. “We also work hard to have our pitchers manage their emotions and body language in practice and games. Many pitchers become their own worst enemy and allow frustration to dictate how they perform in a tight game. Working on this in practice by incorporating different pressure situation drills, or a tight strike zone will prepare them to keep their composure in a game. On game day we remind our pitchers to worry about what they can control and to have a short memory on the mound! “
Last season, Coach Yerdon-Grange led her team to a 29-15 finish where they made the program's 4th NCAA Appearance. During the season, the team won the Liberty League Tournament and four of Yerdon-Grange’s players were named to the NFCA All-Region Team. The team looks for another strong season in 2013.
