NJ Home Inspector Michael Del Greco is giving water leakage alarms away to NJ home buyers to increase awareness of the damaged caused by undetected water leaks.
Del Greco says "I see very extensive damage to homes all the time because no one knew water leakage was occurring, alarms like these provide an immediate alarm to notify the home owner a problem exists."
Accurate Inspections a NJ Home Inspection firm has inspected thousands of Northern New Jersey homes since 1993 and finds water damages to be the most easily prevented cause of damage to homes.
All one has to do when living in a home is repair what breaks and keep water out according to Del Greco. When home owners fail to perform ordinary maintenance or to cure water leakage (from plumbing leaks, roof leaks or basement water infiltration) the home quickly suffers major damages that can be difficult and expensive to cure.
While it may seem like common sense to maintain ones largest investment many homes today get little or no maintenance. Not repairing small problems is one way to allow them to become big problems very quickly.
Small water leaks quickly damage the structure of the home and also make the home more attractive to termites, carpenter ants, powder post beetles and other wood destroying insects.
Del Greco advises home owners "carpenter ants are a lot like us, they either need water or moisture to survive. Keeping your home dry and free of leaks will may insects feel less welcome."
Water leakage alarms should be placed near clothes washers, water heaters, boilers and in any other areas where a puddle of water would be a cause for concern.
