Tom Nicholson, founder and CEO of IconNicholson, a leading NYC-based digital agency and US flagship of LBi International, today announced his departure from LBi and the launch of Nicholson NY, a new agency focused on helping marketers engage customers through next-generation services and channels that leverage the emerging 'mobile Internet'.

"We need a new kind of thinking about marketing and about how the agency model operates as the Internet moves into its next phase," notes Nicholson, "The first wave of PC-based digital marketing has been with us now for over 15 years. But as the technologies change so do customers. Powerful new devices like the iPhone, linked to ubiquitous increasingly faster networks and sensing technologies are already starting to change how people conduct their lives and do commerce. This trend will accelerate and NNY is dedicated to helping progressive marketers make sense of the new space early and use it to differentiate their businesses."

Under Nicholson's leadership, IconNicholson consistently anticipated trends in the interactive industry as it evolved from location-based corporate engagements in the early 1990's to the full-service web agency model of today. Over the past decade, Nicholson's creative vision drove the company's growth:

  •     In 1999, Advertising Age ranked the firm among the world's top three for creativity among all interactive agencies.
  •     IconNicholson's Social Retailing® concept, developed for fashion designer Nanette Lepore, brought social shopping into the brick-and-mortar store for the first time, foreshadowing the emerging 'mobile Internet'. Along with the iPhone™, Social Retailing® was named one of TIME Magazine's Top 50 Inventions of the Year.
  •     In 2007, Nicholson's firm was selected for the One Show's 10 Best Interactive Campaigns of the Decade celebrating the Interactive Industry's 10th anniversary.
  •     In 2009, IconNicholson was ranked as a US market leader by independent research firm Forrester Research, Inc. in its June 2009 report, The Forrester Wave™.

In 1999, Nicholson sold the company to Swedish-based IconMedialab, now LBi International. He then served for 5 years on the public company's Board of Directors and as CEO of IconNicholson for 9 years, becoming US Chairman in 2009.

"It's changing fast," comments Nicholson, "I can't think of a more exciting time for the industry and for clients. Customers are continuing to become more empowered through social media and anytime-anyplace access to information and commerce. More than ever, good marketing means delivering value and branded utility that enriches your customers' lives and walks the walk of your brand promise. We now have an entirely new set of tools to achieve that."
