North Lake College announced today an upcoming Sustainability Symposium to teach strategies for weaving environmental responsibility into companies, municipalities, and public schools. Speakers include experts such as David Rodriguez, North Texas USGBC Chairman Emeritus; Jim Thomas, Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility for J.C. Penney Co.; Ramiro Lopez, City of Irving Director of Compliance; David Bell, CEO of Bell Industries and others. Topics include an overview of sustainability, strategies for greening city governments and communities, and "triple bottom line" applications for large companies and small enterprises. Tactical workshops will also cover practical solutions for energy efficiency, renewable energy, and commercial recycling. The event, which is geared towards decision makers at every level in their organizations, will be held on Friday, April 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a price of $79.00 per attendee.

According to North Lake President Dr. Herlinda Glasscock, "North Lake is proud to demonstrate leadership in this arena. Now that we have cultivated a sustainable campus, we believe it's time to extend our experience out into the community at large. We believe sustainability equals opportunity for North Texans. North Lake College is proud to offer programs ranging from continuing education in sustainability for executives and business owners to preparation for energy-efficiency jobs for students.” Dr. Glasscock is a signatory of The Presidents Climate Commitment , a high-visibility effort to address global warming by gaining institutional commitments to neutralize greenhouse gas emissions, and to accelerate the efforts of higher education to equip society to re-stabilize the earth's climate.

This Sustainability Symposium kicks off North Lake's Sustainability Speaker Series and marks the official launch of North Lake's new Center for Sustainability. North Lake College encourages a culture of environmental stewardship through initiatives such as RecycleMania. Other tangible demonstrations of environmental responsibility include native gardens, and LEED certification of the Workforce Development Center, which operates at a water reduction of 45 percent and contains a combined 65 percent of locally-sourced and recycled materials.
