Northern California Takes Gold at the 2018 Transplant Games of America
SAN RAMON, Calif. (PRWEB) August 24, 2018 -- Team NorCal became the biggest winner at this year’s Donate Life Transplant Games of America in Utah by taking home the overall Team Cup with 120 medals. The announcement was made today by Donor Network West, the federally designated organ and tissue recovery organization for northern California and Nevada.
The Transplant Games, which took place in Salt Lake City August 2-7, is a multi-sport event for individuals who have undergone life-saving transplant surgeries. Competition events are open to organ, bone marrow, corneal and tissue transplant recipients as well as living donors. This year, over 40 teams from across the United States competed in the week-long games, which included Olympic-style events like track and field, swimming, badminton, basketball, and pickleball.
Team NorCal - managed by Donor Network West and comprised of 37 athletes from northern and central California - took home 60 gold medals, 37 silver, and 23 bronze. Northern California’s total delegation of athletes, donor families, and supporters surpassed 100 people.
“We are very proud of every member of the team—athletes and donor family members. Our athletes trained very hard, motivated by their desire to pay tribute to their donors,” says Beverly Mayer, Marketing Manager of Donor Network West and Team NorCal’s Captain. This is way more than an athletic event; it is a way to promote organ and tissue donation and to celebrate the Gift of Life.”
Team NorCal has participated in the Donate Life Transplant Games of America since 1980. Persons interested in joining the team for the 2020 games in New Jersey can send an email to events(at)dnwest.org.
More than 10,000 people await a life-saving organ transplant in northern California and Nevada. One organ donor can save the lives of up to eight people and a tissue donor can heal more than 75 others. Anyone can register as a donor at DonorNetworkWest.org or at the DMV.
