The children had a wonderful time learning the importance of healthy snacks. It was great to hear them name healthy snacks and see smiles on their faces

National Nutrition Month is a nutrition education and information campaign sponsored the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. This campaign highlights the importance of developing healthy eating and physical activity habits. Due to the alarming childhood obesity rates, the school communities are taking a proactive approach to promoting a healthy lifestyle that will last a lifetime. Whitsons School Nutrition partnered with different school districts to promote healthy eating habits through wellness fairs, Nutrition Safari character visits and other nutrition initiatives.
During Nutrition Week, Northridge and Indian Hollow Elementary schools at Commack School District were visited by Murray the Monkey, a lovable character from the award-winning Nutrition Safari® (Food Management Magazine’s Best Wellness Initiative 2008 Award Winner), who spoke to the children about nutrition and the importance of eating fresh fruits and vegetables. At Commack High School, Whitsons Vending set up a sample tasting table featuring many of the items that can be purchased from the Healthy Vending machines, such as crunch dried fruit, pineapple bites and low-fat smoothies, as a way to promote healthier snack choices.
On March 3rd, Hicksville School District held its 2nd Annual Wellness Fair. The Hicksville community, teachers, parents and students had the opportunity to be exposed to different healthy physical activities and learn about nutrition. Whitsons School Nutrition presented a booth promoting nutrition education, such as showing fat and sugar content of favorite comfort foods, how to measure meal portions, and the benefits of exercising and staying active.
East Islip School District was visited by Grant the Gazelle, a Nutrition Safari® character, who stopped by the elementary schools during the district’s Nutrition Week. Grant promoted healthy snacks such as fruit, veggies and whole grains. According to Sue Kavanagh, PTA Council Nutrition Representative, “The children had a wonderful time learning the importance of healthy snacks. It was great to hear them name healthy snacks and see smiles on their faces.”
