Joseph A. Ginarte, a New York and New Jersey personal injury attorney, says rush for profits in construction following Hurricane Sandy and an effort to meet ongoing high demand for luxury housing in New York City should not result in safety shortcuts.

Developers and construction companies should rededicate themselves to a safe work environment, proper training and the availability of proper safety equipment for employees.

New York and New Jersey construction injury lawyer Joseph A. Ginarte said today that the construction boom expected in New York City and the rebuilding effort in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy could result in increased jobsite injuries if construction site supervisors lose sight of safety considerations.

“We hope the fast pace and lure of profits won’t cause construction companies to take the kind of safety shortcuts that lead to workplace accidents and injuries,” said Ginarte, founder of Ginarte O’Dwyer Gonzalez Gallardo & Winograd, LLP, a personal injury law firm that serves clients throughout the New York and New Jersey metro area.

Bloomberg Businessweek predicted a construction boom on two fronts in the New York City area in 2013. Work to rebuild the World Trade Center will continue alongside a rising demand for luxury housing in the city, and reconstruction and related purchases and hiring to address Hurricane Sandy damage will be an economic boon for the entire Northeast.

Bloomberg said spending on Hurricane Sandy reconstruction could reach $50 billion, with most coming in the first quarter of 2013.

The Building Congress, which represents New York’s construction industry and unions, expects there to be 113,400 jobs in construction over the next two years, Bloomberg said. About $30.7 billion will have been spent by the end of December, up more than 9 percent from 2011.

“Developers and construction companies should rededicate themselves to a safe work environment, proper training and the availability of proper safety equipment for employees,” Ginarte said. “The construction work will still be there, and profits will be better without money lost to worksite accidents and injuries.”

The law firm of Ginarte O’Dwyer Gonzalez Gallardo & Winograd is one of the largest law firms to investigate construction accidents in the NY / NJ metro area. Ginarte has secured multimillion-dollar settlements through personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits on behalf of injured construction workers or the surviving family members of workers killed in construction site accidents.

Ginarte said construction workers in the New York City metro area suffer serious injuries every day in workplace accidents. Too often they are accidents that could have been avoided.

“A construction worker who was injured on the job should contact an experienced construction accident lawyer as soon as possible for a review of their case,” Ginarte said.

“Many construction site accidents are a product of negligence on the part of the site supervisors or the construction firm itself,” the veteran attorney said. “Those who are injured, in many cases, have a right to compensation for their injuries and other losses.”
