Providing appropriate safety equipment and taking the time to train workers are the first steps in making job sites safe.
Newark, N.J. (PRWEB) May 12, 2012
New York and New Jersey construction injury lawyer Joseph A. Ginarte said today that his firm supports a recently launched national campaign by several national worker safety organizations to prevent falls at residential construction sites.
“With summer arriving and the increase in construction activity that will likely take place in the coming months, this is a good time to call attention to how proper training and equipment can help to eliminate falls among construction workers,” said Ginarte of the New York and New Jersey personal injury firm of Ginarte O’Dwyer Gonzalez Gallardo & Winograd, LLP.
“We hope all construction firms in the New York-New Jersey metro will take the time to review and use the tools that these organizations are providing,” Ginarte said. “Providing appropriate safety equipment and taking the time to train workers are the first steps in making job sites safe.”
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Center for Construction Research and Training (CPWR) joined in late April to launch the safety campaign.
“Safety is everyone’s business, and this campaign will provide the knowledge and tools to help contractors and workers stay safe on the job,” said NIOSH Director John Howard, M.D., in a released statement.
Resources and information about how individuals and firms can participate in the campaign can be found at http://www.stopconstructionfalls.com.
Falls are the leading cause of work-related injuries and deaths in the construction industry, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The BLS says that in 2010 more than 10,000 construction workers in the private construction industry were seriously injured as a result of falling while working from heights on the job. Another 255 workers died from their injuries.
“Many factors contribute to the high number of injury-producing falls at construction sites,” said Ginarte, whose law firm is one of the largest firms handling construction accident cases in the NY / NJ metro area.
“Workers might slip and fall because of slick surfaces. They can trip and fall because jobsites are messy with debris that should have been cleaned up or materials and equipment that were not properly stored. Workers who have not been properly trained might wear safety harnesses incorrectly, or they might not understand the importance of staying connected to safety lines.”
Ginarte said that, in addition to causing hourly-wage workers to miss work, fall injuries can result in very high medical bills or, in the case of severe injuries, expenses for rehabilitation and assistive equipment. Some workers are permanently disabled in falls.
“We support this campaign and other efforts to promote safe practices in the construction industry by workers as well as their employers,” Ginarte said.
“When someone’s life is disrupted by a devastating injury in a work-related accident that was caused by neglect on the part of their employer or supervisors, we will stand up for the rights of the injured worker to seek compensation.”
