Helicopters may be more complicated to maneuver than a car, but the pilots have far more training than the majority of people on the roadways.
New York, NY (PRWEB) April 17, 2013
New York auto accident lawyer David Perecman wants drivers to think of a helicopter accident next time they consider texting while driving. A medical helicopter crashed in Missouri on August 26, 2011 killing all four people on board. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recently found that personal text messages before and during the fatal flight were likely a contributing factor in the crash
“Texting while driving is dangerous, whether the vehicle being operated is a car, bus, or helicopter,” said Perecman. “Helicopters may be more complicated to maneuver than a car, but the pilots have far more training than the majority of people on the roadways.”
This is the first time that texting while flying was linked to a fatal commercial air crash, said the NTSB.
“Distracted driving has been compared to drunken driving. People who wouldn’t drink and drive, shouldn’t text and drive,” said Perecman. “Texting while driving has been blamed for many vehicular accidents.”
Text messaging while driving increases the crash risk 23 times, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Every day, more than nine people in the United States are killed and more than 1,060 people are injured in crashes reportedly involving a distracted driver, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Distracted driving included text messaging.
“This helicopter crash again supports the fact that texting while operating any form of transportation is not safe,” said Perecman. “A person who has been in an accident caused by a driver who was text messaging should definitely call an experienced auto accident attorney.”
