New York civil rights violation lawyer David Perecman commends the head of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for wanting to use the agency's clout to get more minority dock workers hired.
Patrick Foye, the executive director of the Port Authority, told this to union members and academics at an NYU event last week, reported WNYC (2/24/2012).
The Port Authority owns docks at ports on both New York and New Jersey waterways. Ideas for increasing minority hiring included the addition of binding diversity rules to all leases and attempts to amend current leases with similar regulations, according to the New York Post (1/17/2012).

According to Foye, nearly 85 percent of dock workers are white and over 90 percent are male. His statistics on the racial and gender homogeneity of dock workers are from the Waterfront Commission.

The International Longshoremen's Association is in charge of dock worker hirings.
“The Port Authority has taken a positive step forward in efforts to tackle race discrimination and employment practices,” said New York civil rights violation lawyer Perecman.
